Selling wool is much more than selling a fine natural fibre. Spanish wool merchants have been a social elite creating great wealth on the European continent.
Since King Alfonso X The Wise founded the Honourable Council of Livestock Farmers in 1273, Spain has held a European monopoly on merino wool.
The drovers' roads, where the flocks travelled during the year, were the motorways of their time. Along them information, culture and wealth were carried. The shepherds thus became valued, privileged citizens, since the greatest asset of the Iberian Peninsula was in their hands: merino wool, which was the mainstay of the Spanish economy until sixty years ago.
To manufacture and sell wool today is to transmit a centuries-old culture which is still very much alive. We, the wool merchants, are the legitimate heirs to that privileged social class that distributed wealth and culture all over the country, a unique event in the history of the world, which had a decisive influence on the development of Europe. To work with wool is to work with the very fibre of European culture.
